How to Start a Kitchen Herb Garden from Seed
Fresh herbs, right at home
A kitchen herb garden means fresh flavour just an arm’s reach away — and growing from seed is cheap, easy, and rewarding. You don’t even need a garden; a sunny windowsill or balcony works. Here’s how to start.
Choose easy herbs to begin
Start with forgiving, fast herbs like coriander (dhania), fenugreek (methi), basil (tulsi), and mint. They germinate readily and you’ll be harvesting before long.
Pick the right spot
Most herbs love sunlight — a windowsill, balcony, or kitchen ledge that gets several hours of sun is ideal. For shadier spots, mint and coriander cope better than sun-lovers.
Use pots with drainage
Grow herbs in pots or containers with drainage holes, filled with light, rich potting mix. Good drainage keeps roots healthy — soggy soil is the main way herbs fail.
Sow and keep moist
Sow the seeds at the right depth (a light covering for most herbs), water gently, and keep the soil consistently moist until they sprout. Don’t let it dry out at this stage.
Thin and give light
Thin crowded seedlings so the strongest thrive, and give them plenty of light so they grow bushy, not leggy. Turn pots occasionally for even growth.
Harvest little and often
Once herbs are established, snip leaves regularly from the top — this encourages bushier growth and keeps plants productive. Don’t strip a plant bare; harvest a little at a time.
Keep sowing
Fast herbs like coriander and methi are best sown in small batches every few weeks, so you always have a fresh supply.
